What can I expect during a Nutritional Medicine consultation?

I get this question all the time! So let me lay out what to expect in a Nutritional Medicine consultation with me (because all practitioners work differently).

  1. We meet for the first time during an initial consultation (I allow 45 minutes for this). We discuss:

    • Your goals

    • What you’ve tried in the past

    • What’s worked and what hasn’t

    • Your current diet

    • Your bowel movements/digestion

    • Any other relevant information

  2. If you have had recent blood tests and you have copies then we can look through them and see what pops up. We may discuss getting updated blood tests if it’s been awhile and it seems necessary. This can be done through your GP (usually bulk billed if deemed medically necessary), or it can be done via Nutripath, a private billing lab.

  3. We will discuss any current supplements you’re taking and work out if they are still necessary, if anything needs changing or if we’re happy to keep them as they are.

  4. We will also talk about your treatment plan going forward and what we expect to achieve over that period.

  5. At the end of your session you will be provided with (via email). This email takes 24-48 hours to come through depending on when your appointment was.

    • A nutrition guide to follow. This maybe include a macro guide, a particular type of nutrition plan like Anti-Inflammatory, or low-histamine, recommend fibre and water intake etc.

    • Recipes (I like to batch recipes into Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Snacks). You’ll be provided with 3 options for each that you can rotate over a 2 week period

    • Suggested blood tests, if required

    • A nutritional supplement prescription, if required

Your follow up appointment will also be booked during this time. When you require your follow up will depend on your goals and how much support you would like or need to get there. I usually recommend the first follow up is booked 2 weeks after your initial appointment. This will be a good indicator on whether you are progressing well and can be pushed to a monthly follow up or whether you will be additional support and continue to come at fortnightly intervals.

If you’re considering a Nutritional Medicine consultation and would like to know more, give me a call or email and we can talk further.
