How do you you become an Acupuncturist?

I am still often asked what I studied to become an acupuncturist and a lot of people are really surprised by the answer.

In Australia, to become a Chinese Medicine practitioner, you must complete a Bachelor of Health Science. This degree includes subjects like biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology, on top of actually learning the ancient practices of Chinese Medicine, and spending over 500 hours in observed clinical practice.

To be able to practice as an Acupuncturist in Australia we are also required to be registered with AHPRA, (The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is responsible for the registration and accreditation of various health professions in Australia)

Acupuncturist is also a protected title. You can only called yourself an acupuncturist if you meet the above requirements. However, anyone can say they practice acupuncture. This may range from a qualified health profession having done additional professional development right down to a person whose completed a weekend course, without any formal health education behind them. When booking an appointment for acupuncture please ensure it’s to a registered acupuncturist.
